When not doing my day job, or spending time with my family, I have been looking at a range of new and developing location based social network applications designed for the mobile. A summary of each one is presented below with links to their websites. What I have seen in the first few months of the year is a rapid rise in the number of location aware or location enabled mobile social networking applications more »

I have been writing a lot about mobile social networking lately, and over the past 2 days have experienced the power of it first hand.
This post is a summary of how a few reasonably low resolution pictures of the new Heathrow Terminal 5 on opening day ended up on a new social media website, Now Public.

The UK's latest jewel in the crown, the new London Heathrow Terminal 5 building was opened for business on Thursday 27th March 2008. As you will all know by now, the opening day turned into a complete mess.
When I learned that my flight back from Moscow would arrive at the new T5 on Thursday evening, I was quite excited to think I might be one of the first to use this new terminal. more »

Quoting from Gigaom "SiRF Technology (SIRF), a San Jose, Calif.-based maker of GPS chips, this morning said it was cutting jobs and trying to restructure its business due to softening consumer demand. With the increase in the launch of mobile versions of social networking sites it got me thinking about the link between the PC version of a site and the mobile equivalent, and the desire for those people using social networking sites to take the experience with them when they are mobile. Perhaps the link between web based and mobile applications will drive new location service revenues and applications in 2008? more »

Wikipedia describes a Frenemy as portmanteau of friend and enemy which can refer to either an enemy disguised as a friend or to a partner that is simultaneously a competitor. In an article in today's Financial times by Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson titled "Advertisers welcome prospect of stronger rival to Google", Sir Martin describes Google as a Frenemy and argues that a Microsoft-Yahoo! tie-up would be good for the advertising industry. Is Google a Frenemy? Comments welcome below. Sunday, March 16

Try it - they have made both the installation, web based interface and the whole process so easy. There is even an email aggregation feature, and a dynamic reply feature so replies come from the account they were sent to. The simplicity is your mobile number becomes your email address eg 07979123456@momail.co.uk Couldn't be simpler. They have just received some serious funding and I predict these guys will become "the hotmail of mobile". Read more about momail here.

A few weeks ago I read about the new Yahoo! location initiative called Fire Eagle. Being a practitioner in the Location industry, I rushed to the site, only to find I needed an invitation. Luckily David Recordon from sixapart (movable type) was kind enough to send me one. For those of you trying to get an invitation for yourself, my advice is to wait until there are a few more applications to try. At the moment, many things are "coming soon".
Quoting from the public front page, the site says "Fire Eagle is the secure and stylish way to share your location with sites and services online while giving you unprecedented control over your data and privacy. We’re here to make the whole web respond to your location and help you to discover more about the world around you." more »
